Christianity was founded in the 1st century AD, beginning with the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ who was born around 4 to 6 BC and crucified around 30 AD. The religion originated as a Jewish movement in the Roman province of Judea and spread rapidly through the missionary efforts of Jesus' apostles after his death. The followers of Jesus, initially called disciples, began to be referred to as Christians around AD 40-50 in Antioch. This period marks the transition from a Jewish sect to a distinct religion as Gentiles (non-Jews) joined the movement, particularly after the admission of the Roman centurion Cornelius into the church around 40 AD.
