Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the year 1921. However, he actually received the prize one year later, in 1922, due to the Nobel Committee reserving the award as they initially felt none of the nominations met the criteria that year. The prize was given to him "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect".
