Football, as we know it today (association football or soccer), was invented in England with the establishment of a standardized set of rules by the Football Association in 1863. The key historical moment was a meeting on October 26, 1863, at the Freemasons' Tavern in London, which led to the codification of the game's rules. Ebenezer Morley is often referred to as the 'father' of the Football Association because of his role in initiating this meeting and the formulation of the rules. However, versions of football existed long before this. Early forms of the game can be traced back to ancient times, such as "cuju" in China during the Han dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD), and similar ball games were played in ancient Greece and Rome. Various chaotic football-like games were also played in England before 1863, but these lacked universal rules until the Football Association's formalization of the game.
