The U.S. state of Georgia was founded as a British colony in 1732. The first settlement in Georgia was established in 1733 when James Oglethorpe and 113 immigrants arrived at Savannah. Georgia was the last of the original thirteen colonies to be established. It was named in honor of King George II of Great Britain, who granted the charter in 1732. The colony initially served as a buffer zone between British South Carolina and Spanish Florida. Georgia became a U.S. state in 1788 as the fourth state to ratify the United States Constitution.
