Ulysses S. Grant was elected president of the United States in the presidential election held on November 3, 1868. He was the Republican nominee and won against Democratic candidate Horatio Seymour. Grant took office as the 18th president on March 4, 1869. He was a war hero who had led the Union Army to victory in the Civil War, which helped boost his popularity and secure his election.
Grant was re-elected for a second term in the election on November 5, 1872, defeating Democratic and Liberal Republican candidate Horace Greeley.
