Hawaii was annexed by the United States on July 7, 1898, when President William McKinley signed the Newlands Resolution, a joint resolution passed by both houses of Congress. The formal ceremony marking the annexation took place later on August 12, 1898, at the ʻIolani Palace, where the Hawaiian flag was lowered and the American flag was raised. Following annexation, Hawaii became a U.S. territory officially in 1900.
