Islam was founded in the 7th century CE. It began in 610 CE when the Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel while in a cave on Mount Hira near Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia. These revelations continued over the next 22 years and were later compiled into the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam.
