The music for "Land of Hope and Glory" was written by Edward Elgar in 1901 as part of his "Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1." The lyrics were then added by A.C. Benson in 1902, at the suggestion of King Edward VII, who thought the tune would make a great song. The song was originally performed in June 1902 and was incorporated into Elgar's Coronation Ode for the coronation of King Edward VII, which was postponed to later in 1902 due to the king's illness.
