when was lithium discovered

Lithium was discovered in 1817 by the Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson. He found it while analyzing the mineral petalite in Stockholm, Sweden. The pure metal was first isolated a few years later in 1821 by William Brande and Humphry Davy independently through electrolysis of lithium compounds.
