Plutonium was first synthesized and isolated in late 1940 and early 1941 at the University of California, Berkeley, by bombarding uranium-238 with deuterons in a cyclotron. The isotope plutonium-238 was identified chemically on February 23–24, 1941, confirming the new element, which was named after the planet Pluto.
