The carving on Stone Mountain began in 1915 and was completed in 1972. The massive relief sculpture depicts three Confederate leaders: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. The work took nearly half a century to complete, involving multiple sculptors including Gutzon Borglum (1915–1925), Augustus Lukeman (1925–1928), and Walter Hancock (1963–1972). The carving was dedicated in 1970 and fully declared complete in 1972.
