Switzerland was founded in the year 1291. The founding is traditionally marked by the alliance of three cantons—Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden—who formed a defensive and economic pact through the Federal Charter of 1291, which is considered the country's founding document. This alliance was formed for mutual support against external threats and is often regarded as the beginning of the Swiss Confederation. The modern federal state of Switzerland, however, was officially established later in 1848 with the adoption of the Swiss Federal Constitution, but the roots of Swiss nationhood date back to 1291.
