The Sydney Harbour Bridge was built starting in 1924 and officially opened on March 19, 1932. The construction took around eight years, with the two sides of the steel arch meeting in the middle in 1930. The bridge was a significant engineering feat of its time, using almost 53,000 tonnes of steel and more than six million rivets. It was designed under the supervision of Chief Engineer John Bradfield and constructed by the English company Dorman Long & Co.
