The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery, was ratified on December 6, 1865. This ratification occurred when Georgia became the 27th state to approve the amendment, fulfilling the requirement of three-fourths of the then 36 states. The amendment was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and submitted to the states for ratification on February 1, 1865.
