The catapult was invented around 399 BC by Ancient Greek soldiers. This invention aimed to propel objects at long distances to damage enemy forces without close combat. The earliest recorded use of catapults was during the siege of Motya in Sicily shortly after their invention. The design is believed to have been influenced by the crossbow, and the concept evolved significantly under Greek and later Roman use.
