The cell theory was formulated in the 1830s by two German scientists, Theodor Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleiden. They proposed that all living organisms are composed of cells and that the cell is the basic unit of life, with later additions by Rudolf Virchow in the 1850s stating that new cells arise from existing cells. These ideas together constitute what is known as cell theory.
