The Edmund Fitzgerald was found on May 4, 1976. It was discovered by a submersible operated by the exploration team led by captain and diver Bob Ballard’s team, lying in two large pieces about 530 feet deep in Lake Superior, roughly 17 miles northeast of Whitefish Point, Michigan. The hull had broken into at least two major sections, consistent with the known distress during the 1975 storm, and the discovery confirmed the shipwreck location that had been the subject of extensive search efforts after the vessel vanished on November 10, 1975.
