when was the euro introduced

The euro was officially introduced as a currency on January 1, 1999. At first, it existed as a non-cash monetary unit used mainly for accounting and financial transactions. Euro banknotes and coins were introduced later on January 1, 2002, replacing the national currencies of the participating countries in the eurozone.
