The first car widely recognized as the first practical automobile was made by Karl Benz in 1885/1886. This vehicle, known as the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, was powered by an internal combustion engine and had three wheels. Karl Benz applied for the patent on January 29, 1886, and the car made its first public drive in 1886. The Benz Patent-Motorwagen is often credited as the first modern car and the first one put into series production.
