The first telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. He was granted the US patent for the telephone on March 7, 1876. Shortly after, on March 10, 1876, Bell made the first intelligible telephone call to his assistant Thomas Watson, famously saying, "Mr Watson, come here—I want to see you." This marks the invention and first use of the telephone for speech transmission.
