The Fracture in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 happened 67 years ago. This event marked the first appearance of the Paintress, who emerged with a monolith on which she painted the number 100. This led to the city of Lumière being spun into the sea and isolated from the rest of the world. Each year, the Paintress awakes and lowers the number on the monolith by one, cursing residents whose age matches that number to disappear in an annual event called the Gommage. Expedition 33 is the name of the current quest in the game, occurring 67 years after the Fracture, as the city tries to confront the Paintress and learn more about the curse.
