The last ice age, scientifically known as the Last Glacial Period, lasted from about 115,000 years ago to around 11,700 years ago. The peak of this ice age, called the Last Glacial Maximum, occurred between roughly 26,000 and 20,000 years ago, when ice sheets were at their greatest extent. This period ended with a warming phase marking the start of the current geological epoch, the Holocene, around 11,700 years ago. Since then, Earth has been in a warmer interglacial period following the end of the last ice age.
