The last U.S. government shutdown occurred from December 22, 2018, to January 25, 2019, lasting 35 days. This was the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, caused mainly by a funding dispute over $5.7 billion requested for a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. It affected about one-fourth of government activities, furloughing around 800,000 federal employees or requiring them to work without pay, and led to significant economic costs estimated to be in the billions of dollars.
