The measles vaccine was created and first licensed in 1963. It was developed by John Enders and colleagues from the Edmonston-B strain of the measles virus. This initial vaccine was a live attenuated version derived from the virus isolated from a young boy named David Edmonston. In 1968, an improved and even weaker (more attenuated) measles vaccine was developed by Maurice Hilleman and colleagues, which began to be distributed and has been the standard measles vaccine used in the United States since then.
