The Odyssey is believed to have been written around 750 to 650 BCE. It was composed in Homeric Greek and is traditionally attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer. Scholars suggest it may have been created shortly after the Greek alphabet was adopted from the Phoenicians, and it was originally transmitted through oral tradition before being written down. The earliest surviving manuscripts date from much later, around the 9th to 11th centuries CE. This epic is one of the oldest surviving works of literature and became part of the Greek literary canon by the mid-6th century BCE.
