The telephone was invented in the year 1876. Alexander Graham Bell was granted the first U.S. patent for the telephone on March 7, 1876. The first intelligible telephone communication was made by Bell on March 10, 1876, when he said to his assistant, "Mr. Watson, come here—I want to see you".

While Bell is credited with the invention due to the patent, other inventors like Antonio Meucci (around 1849) and Johann Philipp Reis (1861) had earlier developed devices that could transmit sound electrically, but Bell's patent and demonstration marked the establishment of the modern telephone.
