The Wave Hill walk-off began on 23 August 1966 when about 200 Gurindji stockmen, domestic workers, and their families walked off Wave Hill cattle station in the Northern Territory. The walk-off was led by Gurindji man Vincent Lingiari and was initially in protest of poor working and living conditions but evolved into a demand for the return of traditional lands. The strike lasted for seven years, ending on 16 August 1975, when after negotiations, Prime Minister Gough Whitlam symbolically handed back land to the Gurindji people, marking a significant moment in the Aboriginal land rights movement in Australia.
