Tylenol was created in 1955 by McNeil Laboratories. It was initially introduced as Tylenol Elixir for Children and marketed as a prescription product. The active ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen, which had been known since the late 19th century but was not widely used until McNeil Laboratories developed Tylenol as a safer alternative to aspirin for pain and fever relief. The brand name "Tylenol" was derived by McNeil's team from the chemical name of acetaminophen: N-acetyl-para-aminophenol (APAP).
