Universal Studios Orlando, known as Universal Studios Florida, was built starting in 1986 and officially opened to the public on June 7, 1990. The construction cost was estimated at $630 million. The park was developed on a 414-acre plot in Orlando, Florida, and was designed as a combination of a theme park and a working motion picture studio. It was a joint venture with ownership split between MCA Universal and The Rank Organisation. The grand opening featured many notable celebrities and marked a new entertainment destination competing with Disney World in the area.
