Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, who was the physical director at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. Originally called "mintonette," the game was created as a less physically demanding alternative to basketball, combining elements from basketball, tennis, handball, and baseball. The name "volleyball" was adopted later after a demonstration game when a spectator noted the volleying nature of the game.
