Wikipedia was founded on January 15, 2001. It began as a complementary project to Nupedia, an earlier free online encyclopedia, and was launched as a single English language edition. The name Wikipedia is a portmanteau of "wiki" (meaning quick) and "encyclopedia." It quickly grew from a side project for article drafting to a major global online encyclopedia.
