Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001. It began as a single English- language edition and was announced by Larry Sanger on the Nupedia mailing list. The project was started by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger as a complementary project to Nupedia, using a wiki platform to allow collaborative article drafting and editing.
