Braces were first invented in 1728 by French dentist Pierre Fauchard, who designed a device called the "bandeau" to align teeth. Modern braces, more similar to what is used today, appeared around 1819, invented by French orthodontist Christophe-Francois Delabarre. The history of braces goes back even further with primitive versions dating back to ancient Egypt, the Etruscans, and Romans, but the scientific basis for modern orthodontics began in the 18th century.
