Cannons emerged in the 12th–13th centuries, with the earliest reliable evidence pointing to China where gunpowder-based siege weapons developed into tubular gunpowder devices. By the late 13th century they appear in documented use in the Yuan dynasty, and the technology spread across Eurasia during the 14th century, transforming siege warfare, naval combat, and artillery design from then onward.
