Crocs were invented in the year 2002. The original Crocs shoe, called "the Beach," was launched that year at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in Florida and quickly sold out its initial 200 pairs. The brand was founded by three friends, Scott Seamans, Lyndon Hanson, and George Boeddecker Jr., who acquired exclusive rights to the Canadian company Foam Creations' Croslite material, which was key to the shoe's comfort and functionality as a boating shoe. The name "Crocs" is a nod to crocodiles because the shoes perform well both on land and in water, similar to the reptiles. The brand quickly grew in popularity beyond boating to a broader consumer market due to the comfort and unique material of the shoes.
