Eyeglasses were invented in Italy in the late 13th century, around the 1280s to 1290s. The invention is generally credited to Italian monks or craftsmen in Pisa or Florence. These early eyeglasses consisted of two magnifying lenses set in frames made of wood, leather, or animal horn, connected by a rivet or hinge. The earliest recorded mention of eyeglasses comes from a sermon in 1306, indicating that the invention was quite recent at that time. Earlier vision aids like "reading stones" were used as early as the 11th century, but true eyeglasses as wearable spectacles appeared in Italy in the 13th century.
