The airplane was invented by the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright. They made the first controlled, sustained flight of an engine-powered, heavier-than-air aircraft with the Wright Flyer on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This flight is recognized as the birth of modern aviation and the first sustained and controlled powered flight in history.
