The Egyptian pyramids were primarily built during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods, with the most famous pyramids at Giza constructed in the 4th dynasty around 2589 to 2504 BC. The earliest pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Djoser, was built around 2780 BC. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built by Pharaoh Khufu, dates to about 2600 BC, making it about 4,600 years old. Other pyramids, such as those of Khafre and Menkaure, were built shortly after, around 2520 BC and 2490 BC respectively. Pyramids continued to be built until around 1500 BC.
