Tanks were invented during World War I, with the first practical prototype built in 1915 in Britain. The British Mark I tank was the first to be used in combat on September 15, 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. The invention was driven by the need to overcome the deadlock of trench warfare and combined advances in the internal combustion engine, armored plating, and continuous caterpillar tracks.
