when were the royal marines formed

The Royal Marines were formed on 28 October 1664 (as the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot, later known as the Admiral's Regiment), making them one of the oldest marine regiments in Europe. The unit was created under Charles II during the Second Anglo-Dutch War period and has evolved through various reorganizations into today’s Royal Marines.
