Television sets were first installed in private homes experimentally in 1928. However, widespread adoption of TVs in homes took off after World War II. In the United States, only 0.5% of households had a TV in 1946, but this grew dramatically to 55.7% by 1954 and 90% by 1962. In Britain, television households increased from 15,000 in 1947 to 1.4 million in 1952, and 15.1 million by 1968. By the 1970s and especially the 1980s and 1990s, having TVs in homes became nearly universal, with many households owning multiple sets.
