Hurricane Idalia made landfall near Keaton Beach, Florida, at 7:45 a.m. ET on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. After that, it moved northeast and approached Charleston, South Carolina. By 8 p.m. ET on the same day, the storm was about 60 miles west of Charleston, moving in a northeasterly direction, expected to move near or along the South Carolina coast during the night of August 30 and into early August 31. Heavy rainfall began as early as Wednesday morning in the greater Charleston area with storm surge and flooding concerns due to a blue supermoon raising tides higher than normal. The storm weakened to a tropical storm with winds near 65 mph while near Charleston but still caused historic high tides and wind gusts up to 64 mph in the harbor during the evening of August 30.
