The Faroe Islands are a small group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean near Northern Europe. They lie roughly between Iceland, Norway, and Scotland.
Basic location
The Faroe Islands form an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean between Iceland and the Shetland Islands, which lie north of mainland Scotland. They sit about halfway between Iceland and Norway, in the stretch of ocean between the Norwegian Sea and the wider North Atlantic.
Nearby countries and distances
The islands are located northwest of Scotland, east-southeast of Iceland, and west of Norway. They are roughly a few hundred kilometres from Scotland and Iceland and a bit farther from Norway, placing them on the northern fringe of Europe.
Political status
Geographically the Faroes are in the North Atlantic, but politically they are an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. They consist of 18 main islands with their own local government but remain part of the Danish realm.
