Most photosynthetic cells in plants are found primarily in the leaves, specifically within the mesophyll cells. These mesophyll cells contain numerous chloroplasts, the organelles where photosynthesis occurs. Leaves have a flat and wide surface area that maximizes light absorption necessary for photosynthesis, making them the main site for this process in plants. The chloroplasts within the mesophyll cells are packed with chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy to drive photosynthesis.
