The Ten Commandments are found primarily in two places in the Bible:
- Exodus 20:1–17
- Deuteronomy 5:6–21
These passages contain the most widely recognized versions of the Ten Commandments, which God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai (also referred to as Mount Horeb in Deuteronomy). According to the biblical narrative, the commandments were inscribed by the finger of God on two stone tablets and given to Moses to teach the Israelites
. There is also a "Ritual Decalogue" version found in Exodus 34:11–26, which differs somewhat from the other two lists
