The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. They were established in 1996 when Art Modell, the then- owner of the Cleveland Browns, relocated his franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore. As part of the agreement with the NFL and the city of Cleveland, the Browns' name, colors, and history remained in Cleveland, and the Baltimore Ravens were considered a new expansion team. The Ravens play their home games at M&T Bank Stadium and have been headquartered in Owings Mills, Maryland. The team's name was chosen through a fan poll and is inspired by the famous poem "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, who is closely associated with Baltimore.
