The Leeward Islands are a group of islands located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, where it meets the western Atlantic Ocean. They are part of the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles island chain. The Leeward Islands stretch from the Virgin Islands, east of Puerto Rico, southeastward to Guadeloupe and its dependencies. Key islands within the Leeward Islands include the United States Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Saint Martin (split between France and the Netherlands), Saint Barthélemy, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, and Guadeloupe. This group forms the most westerly and northerly part of the Lesser Antilles and lies between latitudes 16° and 19° N and longitudes 61° and 65° W. They are situated at the northeastern boundary between the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean.
