Stratified squamous epithelial tissue is commonly found in areas exposed to abrasion and potential water loss. These locations include:

  • The outer layer of the skin (keratinized type).
  • The lining of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, and part of the tongue and hard palate (non-keratinized type).
  • The vagina, cervix, and labia majora in the female reproductive system.
  • The upper respiratory tract parts that might contact food.
  • The cornea of the eye.
  • The epidermis of the urethra in the urinary system.

Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, which resists abrasion and water loss, mainly covers the skin and parts of the mouth and tongue. Non- keratinized types, which stay moist and lubricated, are found lining internal cavities such as the mouth, esophagus, and vagina.
