The appendix is located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen, near the right hip bone. It is a narrow, finger-shaped pouch that sticks out from the colon, specifically at the junction where the small intestine meets the large intestine, known as the cecum. The base of the appendix is located about 2 cm beneath the ileocecal valve, which separates the small and large intestines. The tip of the appendix can vary in position, sometimes extending into the pelvis or lying behind the cecum. The area on the surface of the abdomen corresponding to the appendix's typical location is known as McBurney's point.
