The term "420" originated in the early 1970s with a group of high school students in San Rafael, California, who called themselves "The Waldos." They would meet at 4:20 p.m. after school to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop and used "420" as a code word for cannabis smoking. Over time, the term spread beyond their circle, aided by its adoption among Grateful Dead fans, and became a widely recognized symbol of cannabis culture. The date April 20th (4/20) subsequently became a day for cannabis celebrations and advocacy. Popular myths such as "420" being a police code or related to Bob Dylan's music have been debunked, with the high school origin being the most credible explanation.
